Green Valley Baptist Church is headed back to New Orleans. And how exciting that I get to be a part!new-orleans-022.jpg
For the second year, we’ll be helping with the rebuilding effort from Hurricane Katrina. It’s been nearly three years since she hit and still, people are living in temporary trailers and waiting to return to their homes.
We’ll work on houses, doing wiring, dry wall, finishing work and whatever they need. I’ll be lending my talents in small ways – picking up trash, trimming the yard, offering a listening ear. We’ll do some prayer walking and backyard Bible schools.
Most of all, though, we’ll be bringing people hope, the eternal hope of a God who loves them and died for them and is calling them to come home.
I’ve been thinking lately a lot about what makes a real Christian. Usually, I think of someone who reads and studies a lot and goes to church meetings. But I’m starting to think it’s a lot simpler – and a lot harder – than that.
Real Christianity, like a good verb, it’s not passive, it’s active. It’s not safe or comfortable or predictable. But it is exhilarating.
Last year, we saw firsthand how Christians were transforming a city that had been known for debauchery and godlessness into a place where His light clearly shines. I’m looking forward to returning to see how the real work of the church is playing out.
“Pure and undefiled religion before God the Father is this: To visit orphans and widows in their trouble and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.” James 1:27
Hey Susie!
Can’t wait to hear about your time in New Orleans! I know that you left planting many seeds of Christianity and also left many new believers to encourage the seeds to grow! God be with you coming home.
